Alicante - The Costa Blanca's Hidden Jewel

Bearing in mind that it is a gateway to the Costa Blanca, Alicante is an excellent base for touring. Containing a pleasing mixture of old and recent culture and traditions, Alicante is found within the popular holiday region of the Costa Blanca. Visitors to Alicante will enjoy warm sunny climate, some of the best beaches Spain has to offer as well as some great examples of Moorish architecture.

Found on the Spanish coastline between the resorts of Benidorm and Elche, The city sits in the shadow of its mountain-topped castle. Alicante and its surrounding landscape are peppered with churches with the most photographed of them all being the Iglesia de Santa Maria. This is the city's oldest church and was constructed between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries being at one time a mosque. The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas was constructed in the 17th century in honour of the city's patron saint and is therefore one of the most important buildings in the region.

Alicante has a good number of ancient buildings to please historians and sightseers and can be found all around the area with statues and columns making a feature of many a once boring location. Keeping a sharp eye across Alicante Bay, the Castillo de Santa Barbara is said to be one of the largest medieval fortresses throughout Europe. Easily accessed by road or by lift (elevator) from the Paseo Maritimo, the castle offers unrivalled vistas of the picturesque surrounding area. In addition to the wonders the Castillo offers to visitors, Alicante has more architectural treasures in the form of the Provincial Gallery, formerly the Gavina Palace, together with its 19th century bullring. All of the Alicante attractions are readily reached with the help of an Alicante Airport hire car. Booking your car hire online will normally produce big savings as well as guaranteeing that the model of car that you want to book is ready and waiting when you arrive at the airport.

Alicante is the perfect resort to come to enjoy your self and the main reason visitors come back every year. With such a huge range of hotel rooms available, there are plenty of luxury Alicante hotels to suit all pockets and tastes. The beaches here have the most golden sand and consist of both easy to get to and secluded coves ideal for private sunbathing. Make your way to Albufereta Beach where there is excellent water sport capabilities. It is a peaceful place that is relatively unspoilt by the majority of holidaymakers.

A ideal location for an after dinner stroll is provided by the Playa del Postiguet. You will be joined by the locals along this attractive sea view - it's a perfect location for bringing the day to a close. Once the Port serving Madrid, Alicante Harbour combines sailing with fishing and is the ideal venue to come for the top fish restaurants in town. The harbour offers an excellent location for activity day and night. Here is where visitors come to eat wonderfully delicious, fresh seafood, learn sailing and end the day with a spot of clubbing into the wee small hours.

Nobody likes a celebration as much as the inhabitants and visitors of Alicante! Here you will discover an event of one type or another taking place throughout the year, no matter when you decide to go. One of the more sombre of festivals in the Costa Blanca is that of the Easter Procession. Wearing black and carrying lighted candles, a model of Jesus is paraded on a cross around the streets. Each November, in order to honour the Patron Saint Crist del Bon Encert, every town has its own fiesta. Don't be surprised to find that shops are closed all day, every day as everything stops for this wonderful combination of singing, dancing and firework displays. On a less religious note, one of the most famous local fiestas is that of the International Puppet Festival.
